This prospective French study looked at the change in nasal symptoms related to sleep, in a questionnaire before and after nasal polyposis surgery. Sixty-three patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery completed the DyNaChron questionnaire before, at six weeks and at seven months after surgery. Polyps were diagnosed by endoscopy and all patients had failed medical treatment. All underwent a radical ethmoidectomy. Self-ratings of nasal obstruction, anterior rhinorrhoea, postnasal discharge, cough and five items that were related to sleep disturbances, due to each symptom of chronic nasal dysfunction, were extracted from the questionnaire as visual analogue scores and analysed. There were significant improvements in symptoms and symptom related sleep disturbance at six weeks and seven months. Preoperatively two thirds of patients reported their nasal symptoms were a cause of their sleep disturbance however postoperatively this dropped to only 10%. The correlation between scores of nasal obstruction and its impact on sleep quality was weak before surgery and strong afterwards.
