Historically, in audiology there is almost an unspoken understanding that when presented with a musician, a nuanced approach is likely to be required. Previous research has already shown there is a higher risk of noise exposure and accompanying signal distortion unless appropriate ear protection is considered but, as this paper discusses, there are additional features of trained and enhanced auditory function in this musical cohort. This study was based around otoacoustic emissions (OAE) responses in a musical and non-musical cohort. It indicated that enhanced OAE responses were shown in the musical cohort despite higher levels of noise exposure. A study for further consideration, adding to the considerations behind the individualised management plans with tailored needs.
