This paper from Beijing looked at 68 patients, 34 in a control group and 34 in an intervention group. Oral exercise training was performed by a specialist swallowing nurse in the intervention group. They found that personalised oral exercises had improved lip, buccal and swallowing function and also improved mandibular movements. Any effect on the tongue, they acknowledged, required further study. They also acknowledged the follow-up time and the long-term effect of postoperative radiation given that the assessment was undertaken on day 15, and one month following surgery. However, it might not be unreasonable to think of significant improvement this early and that such an improvement may be sustained.

Effects of personalised oral exercises on swallowing function among patients with oral cancer after free flap transplantation: a cluster randomised controlled trial.
