Dr Lentz’s Psychoacoustics: Auditory Perception of Listeners with Normal Hearing and Hearing Loss, Second Edition is a 287-page introduction to the eponymous field that fills some (like myself) with great interest, though I have recognised the soporific effect of even mentioning the field on some of my colleagues!
The text marries a clear introduction to underlying principles with their application in a clinical context. It is pitched at a level ideal for the audiology graduate looking to develop their knowledge and move away from procedures and guidelines to the perceptual science underpinning them. The author’s more than 20-years teaching experience in the field rings true and is evident in the clear discussion of principles which comes across as well edited and honed, with a suitable balance of detail whilst not getting lost in the weeds. It is a clear discussion which can then be built upon by further reading (e.g. Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing by Moore).
This expanded second edition has been updated and includes 70 new figures and a new chapter on perception of hearing devices. Existing chapters are also updated, including a chapter on hearing testing methods and a new section added to each chapter addressing the impact of sensorineural loss on everyday listening. It has also been revised with a renewed focus on inclusivity in terms of demonstrations and contributions from traditionally underrepresented groups.
The book is well structured and focused on a student’s reading experience rather than reference, and it prioritises application of learning to help aid comprehension. Learning objectives are outlined for each chapter which is good practice, and each chapter also benefits from an exercise to enhance understanding and a summary to recap each topic.
As is typical with Plural Publishing products, it remains well provisioned on PluralPlus Online with accompanying online content including demonstrations and exercise questions (with answers and slides provided for instructors).
As such, it earns a solid recommendation from me.
