Cummings Review of Otolaryngology presents a condensed and targeted version of the renowned Cummings Otolaryngology, specifically tailored for exam revision. Authored by leading American experts, it is tailor-made for both board examinations and clinical practice. Its relevance extends globally, serving as a valuable resource for trainees taking the FRCS.

The comprehensive text is structured to aid effective studying, with separate chapters on all ENT subspecialties. Additionally, there are chapters on histopathology, radiology, allergy, and maxillofacial surgery which provide essential information about the key concepts in these areas. The inclusion of high-yield information via bullet-pointed summaries ensures focus on pertinent topics crucial for ENT trainees. Therefore, readers must ensure they are comfortable with this style of concise learning as long sentences and paragraphs are rarely seen in the book.

Each chapter concludes with further reading recommendations, guiding readers to explore relevant literature and research papers for deeper understanding around the subject matter.

A standout feature of this book is its digital format, offering accessibility and convenience for modern learners. The inclusion of fantastic tables, diagrams, and surgical steps, including facial plastic flaps, enhances comprehension and aids in visualising complex techniques crucial for examinations.

Despite having plenty of images in the book, common exam topics such as paediatric syndromes could be better displayed with photos and tables. The further reading at the end of each chapter is a great asset to the book but it would be more beneficial to have these at the end of each individual topic or sub chapter, accompanied by landmark papers.

The majority of the book is in bullet points and, although specific and concise, it can make it difficult to understand the topic as there is less context and wording. Nonetheless, it is high-yield information and covers all the relevant points, and therefore the book serves as a brilliant revision aid, but it can be daunting and difficult to contextualise when there is a whole page of bullet points.

In summary, Cummings Review of Otolaryngology – 2nd Edition is a great revision tool, offering a targeted overview of essential ENT concepts. Designed for exam preparation, it provides a streamlined approach to studying, with rich visual aids and tailored discussions, making it an invaluable resource for ENT trainees worldwide.
