The book has been written by the sole author Dr Sandro Burdo MD. He is based at the Circolo Hospital in Varese where he has established his practice and wealth of experience. As the title indicates, this is an encompassing overview of cochlear implants and their role in treating patients with severe to profound hearing loss.

It is not a textbook that delves into every aspect of implantation but gives a refreshing overview of basic science, anatomy and pathophysiological aspects of ‘the hearing apparatus’. The final chapters cover the functioning of a CI, neural transmission and coding. The main manufacturers are mentioned in a balanced way. There are no marketing features or pros and cons about any specific device but some useful comparative illustrations to show implants do differ, which may help in decision-making.

Who is the book aimed at? As it gives a general overview it would be a worthy read for any new professional dealing with deaf patients and with a view of CI. It is basic enough that decerning parents or prospective patients may wish to indulge and understand the process of cochlear implants.

Each chapter has a sensible bibliography to encourage the reader to explore further. Spread over 237 double-column pages it is well illustrated with just over 150 figures and tables which aid to the well-thought-out clarity of the aims of this book. I certainly enjoyed reading the book and ‘revised’ a few things along the way. Overall good value, and I would recommend to CI units.
