The Irish Rhinologic Society has recently launched an introductory patient education podcast series. The initial series will be four episodes, which will also include a dedicated episode to asthma/allergic rhinitis and nasal surgery.
The podcast series has been created through clinicians striving to improve patient outcomes through research and training. One of the key components to best clinical outcome is the educated patient, who is motivated to participate in their own healthcare. Currently 50 per cent of patients leave their clinical appointment confused or unclear about their condition/ treatment, and too often there is misinformation from outside sources that negatively influences best care. The Irish Rhinological Society believes that patient education should start as soon as the patient is diagnosed or indeed as soon as symptoms develop. Poor compliance with medical treatment and under recognition of the impacts of nasal healthcare are particular challenges in rhinology, and so it is hoped that the podcast will offer ready access to a reliable information resource.
The podcast was created by a team of clinicians, including Associate Professors Eleanor Dunican, Marcus Butler and Mona Thornton. Professor Nash Patil, Consultant ENT Surgeon, has also contributed to the project.
“When I was first contacted by Mona regarding this venture in my capacity as Past President of the Institute, I was delighted to get on board,” says Professor Patil. “We reached out to potential sponsors, and soon secured support for the initial podcasts. I am very pleased with the editions to date, and hope that this worthwhile project continues to develop over time, to the benefit of our patients.”
The patient podcast has been supported by ALK- Abello, Medtronic, Tekno-Surgical (part of unipharmedtech) and Viatris.
