The Confederation of European Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (CEORL-HNS) proudly announces the appointment of Professor Jan Plzák as its new president. After serving as President-Elect for the last two years, Prof Plzak took over the presidency from Professor Per Caye-Thomasen at the recent CEORL-HNS Congress held in Dublin. His term will extend until the next congress scheduled for 2026 in Gothenburg.
This prestigious role places him at the forefront of otorhinolaryngology in Europe, a field in which he has made substantial contributions over his distinguished career. Born on 1974, in Prague, Prof Plzák has built a remarkable academic and professional portfolio. He graduated from the 1st Faculty of Medicine at Charles University, Prague, in 1998, and earned his PhD in 2001, focusing on the biology and pathology of cells, particularly in head and neck tumors. His academic journey continued with appointments as Associate Professor in 2009 and Full Professor in 2013 at the same institution, where he has been currently holding the position of Department Head since 2017. His international experience includes fellowships and collaborations with leading institutions in Germany, Spain, Norway and Italy.
In addition to his clinical and academic roles, Prof Plzák has held significant leadership positions, including Chairman of the Czech Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery since 2020, and memberships in various European medical societies. Within CEORL-HNS, Prof Plzak has served with distinction. From 2019 to 2022, he was the General Secretary under the presidency of Professor Cem Meço, playing a crucial role in guiding the organization through a period of significant development from raising its awareness globally to establishing educational programs. His leadership contributions extend further back, as he served as the Scientific Chair of the 3rd European Congress in 2015, held in Prague, where he was instrumental in shaping the scientific program of the event.
As he steps into his new role, Prof Plzák brings a wealth of expertise and a vision to further advance the field of otorhinolaryngology in Europe, building on his extensive experience and commitment to the specialty.
