Declan Costello catches up with the presidents of two important meetings taking place in Italy in June 2023 and discusses the highlights.
With the congress dates of the European Laryngological Society (ELS) and the International Federation of International Head & Neck Oncologic Societies (IFHNOS) overlapping in June 2023, the meetings have cleverly dovetailed their timetables. The ELS congress in Milan will discuss laryngeal cancer topics on 21 June and the first half of 22 June; delegates will then be able to travel to Rome for the IFHNOS congress, where laryngological subjects will be discussed in the second half of that meeting. Those wishing to attend both meetings will be given a 30% discount on each set of registration fees.
The ELS congress will cover all aspects of laryngology, including voice, swallow, neurolaryngology and airway, as well as paediatric laryngology and novel research topics and recent advances including stem cell work and laryngeal transplantation. A range of specialties will be represented, including speech therapists and phoniatricians. And during coffee breaks and special symposia, delegates will have opportunities to try some novel technology, including exoscopic surgery tools and bioendoscopic techniques.
IFHNOS obviously will attract not only ENT head and neck surgeons, but also radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists and others. And clearly all aspects of head and neck cancer are covered, including thyroid, skin and other areas. IFHNOS will bring together 68 international H&N oncological societies, many of which will hold their own symposia during the congress. Topics of particular interest include immunotherapy, innovations in radiation oncology, innovation in surgery (including robotics) and translational research and personalised therapeutics.
Both Cesare Piazza, President of the ELS, and Giuseppe Spriano, Congress President of the IFHNOS, point out that the weather in Italy is beautiful in June, and that delegates wanting to take a short tour of the country could usefully build in a couple of congresses and have a holiday at the same time!
