Welcome

There are few people in the specialty of ENT whose names become truly global, but Heinz Stammberger, who passed away in December 2018, was one such person. His contributions to rhinology genuinely changed our specialty, opening up new possibilities for transnasal surgery. In this edition, we have brought together a series of articles about endoscopic sinus surgery, and about Heinz Stammberger’s immense legacy. You can read our introduction here. I only met him on a couple of occasions, but reading these articles is very moving, and highlights his modesty and his passion for education; I wish I had known him better.

In our Audiology Features section, Alex Griffiths-Brown covers the sometimes thorny issue of psychology, which obviously plays a huge role in all aspects of medical care, not least audiology.

In the coming weeks, the ENT & Audiology News team will be present (in force!) at the CEORL-HNS Congress in Brussels. At the time of writing of this editorial, it is unclear what the UK’s relationship will be with the rest of the EU, but (as ever) we are very much looking forward to catching up with our colleagues from Europe and the rest of the world. If you are coming to Brussels in June/July, please do come and visit us on our stand, no. 5C. In other news, we were absolutely delighted to hear that our good friend, Shahed Quraishi, has been announced as the first winner in the Heinz Stammberger Award for Excellence in Teaching. We can think of no more deserving recipient than ‘Q’, who has worked tirelessly to bring education to all parts of the globe. Very many congratulations!

Finally, we are very proud to introduce our new team of Global Ambassadors. We have invited clinicians from around the world to be our ‘eyes and ears’ in different parts of the globe – you will see that each of these colleagues is a world leader in their field, with each of them representing a different region. You will be getting updates and news items from them in the coming years, and if you would like to let them know about developments in your respective areas, they would be delighted to hear from you. You can read more about them here.
