For July/August 2023 ENT & Audiology News, we focus on our trainees, both ENT and audiology. We hand over the editorial reins to Jonathan Lee (himself an ENT trainee) as guest editor of our ENT features, with Lizanne Steenkamp and Rosalyn Parker on the audiology side. The articles they have commissioned provide a fascinating glimpse into the ‘younger’ (do I sound like a crusty old surgeon?) generation.

We hear about new methods of providing training, and about different models of healthcare around the world and how this impacts trainees. As ‘senior’ (crusty again) specialists, we can learn a great deal from our trainees; in these articles, we gain an insight into the priorities of trainees and how they see the future. In one particularly noteworthy article, Prof Roshna Paul reflects on her work in India and she looks back to give some advice to her younger self, and looks forward to the future of ENT.

In fact, Jonny Lee has been very busy for us, as eagle-eyed readers will notice that he has replaced Chris Coulson as our ENT Editor for the Tech Reviews section, joining Emma LeBlanc. As an innovator and enthusiastic entrepreneur himself, Chris has done a superb job in this section for a number of years, and we are hugely grateful for his dynamism, insight and efficiency. We hope you will come back to us occasionally, Chris! Jonathan, meanwhile, will be known to some of you as a young trainee who has written several pieces for us over the years – welcome on board!

We are always fascinated to hear news from our Global Ambassadors, so it is a particular pleasure to feature an article by our good friend Metin Önerci. He tells us about ENT services in the central Asian countries – the places we might know as the ‘-stans’: Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. It is rare for us to get such an insight into this part of the world, which is rich in culture and history, and boasts spectacular scenery. The development of ENT services in these countries is rarely discussed outside the region.

In my last introduction I mentioned that we (the ENT & Audiology News team) were going to be at several conferences in the spring months. One of the highlights was ESPO, held in Liverpool and hosted by Sujata De and our former editor Ray Clarke. And as we go to press, I am just about to head off to Milan for the ELS congress – a report will follow in due course.

On the topic of courses and conferences, our Events Diary is chock full of forthcoming events – click here to read more.
