The European Board Examination in Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery (EBEORL-HNS) was established in 2008, and has run every year since then. The exam comprises two parts: MCQs and a viva exam, with the viva taking place in Vienna every November.

The examination is aimed at senior residents approaching the end of their specialist training; several countries around Europe now use the qualification as their ‘official’ final exam before completion of training. The exam attracts candidates from around the world – indeed this year had candidates attending from as far afield as Chile and India.

The examiners are senior consultants drawn from around Europe who convene to set questions and agree on standards. The 2024 viva exam had over 130 candidates, and there were 61 examiners and 10 new examiners in training.
