Per Cayé-Thomasen is a professor of otology and skull base surgery in Copenhagen. In Milan, he succeeded Cem Meco as the president of the CEORL-HNS. Under his presidency, the confederation has continued to develop its educational activities and encourage professional collaborations across Europe. Here, he introduces these and other activities of the Confederation, and invites you to participate.
CEORL-HNS is your organisation! If you are a member of any European national ENT society (including UK) or any European subspecialty society (e.g. European Academy of Otology and Neurotology), you are automatically a member of CEORL-HNS. If you are not a member of a European national or subspecialty ORL society, you may become an individual member of CEORL-HNS for 50 Euro/year, which includes a number of perks (see www.ceorlhns.org).
CEORL-HNS is the main European ENT organisation, established in 2009 when the previous EUFOS (national societies) fused with the European Academy (subspecialty societies), also including UEMS ORL (European Union of Medical Specialists ORL) and EBE ORL (the European Board Exam ORL) in an intimate collaboration under one umbrella (Figure 1).

Recently, the Young CEORL-HNS was established, aiming to strengthen contacts and collaboration between young ORL doctors across Europe, but also to strengthen the training, involvement and influence of the young generation within CEORL-HNS.
"During the last year, CEORL-HNS has also initiated a global outreach programme, including travel grants for colleagues from less economically fortunate countries around the world"
We strive to expand international relations and have, thus, an increasing number of international co-opted and affiliated societies, all involved in our congresses and vice versa. During the last year, CEORL-HNS has also initiated a global outreach programme, including travel grants for colleagues from less economically fortunate countries around the world (applicants from Nepal welcomed for the 2024 grant). Travel grants and scholarships are also awarded to young European in-training ENT doctors aiming to join our congresses.

The main activity of CEORL-HNS is indeed the biannual pan-European congress, next in Dublin on 15-19 June 2024 (Figure 2; www.ceorlhns2024.org). All the European, co-opted and affiliated societies are involved in planning the scientific programme for our congresses, and a crucial ambition for our umbrella organisation is to involve all members and stakeholders in a transparent and joint effort to educate, train, stimulate and develop our field – ultimately for the benefit of our patients.

CEORL-HNS also offers low-cost educational activities for young doctors seeking knowledge in the field of ORL, next time in the beautiful city of Dubrovnik, Croatia, in April 2024. No-cost webinars for both the young and more seasoned experts are also on offer, arranged by both CEORL-HNS and Young CEORL-HNS. Webinars in the fall of 2023 included ‘How to set up a vestibular clinic’ and, in collaboration with AAO-HNS, a ‘Global perspective on endoscopic ear surgery’. Activities for 2024 pending.
CEORL-HNS strongly supports The European Board Exam in Otorhinolaryngology (EBEORL). The EBEORL was created by the UEMS ORL Section and Board in October 2008. Since then, more than 1000 doctors have passed the exam, which consists of a written and an oral part. The European Board Exam is not an alternative to a national examination, where one exists, but was created to help harmonise the knowledge base amongst otorhinolaryngologists throughout Europe.
We warmly invite you to join any of our activities – you definitely don’t want to miss the main European ORL event of 2024, the CEORL-HNS Congress in Dublin on 15-19 June 2024, which will be chaired by Professor John Russell – please visit www.ceorlhns2024.org for more information.
