This March, delegates and experts from around the world joined us on the traditional lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, for the 75th ASOHNS Annual Scientific Meeting. The landmark meeting was hosted at the International Convention Centre in Sydney, overlooking a rainy and beautiful Darling Harbour.
Held across three days, the meeting recognised the advances made in otolaryngology over the last 75 years, but also highlighted the emerging innovations at the forefront of the ENT landscape. The theme of the meeting, ‘Celebrating 75 years of Excellence and Expertise’, was evident in the abundance of accomplished local and international guests.
Morning plenary sessions showcased diverse keynote speakers from Hong Kong, South Africa, USA and the UK, joining a wealth of local Australian experts. Personal highlights included Professor Manohar Bance’s discussion of gene therapy for hearing loss and Dr Velda Chow’s discussion of the shifting paradigm in the management of pharyngo-oesophageal tumours.
Delegates were then spoiled for choice when it came to a menu of concurrent scientific sessions. As well as the popular sessions on head and neck surgery and rhinology, this year’s programme stood out for its invigorating focus on new topics. In a positive sign for our colleagues working outside major Australian cities, there was barely standing room in the first scientific session dedicated to rural ENT. A high-yield session focussing on the business of ENT was enjoyed by junior trainees and established consultants alike.
Social events were also in abundance this year, with Welcome Reception, a Women in ENT Evening, Gala Dinner and even a 5K fun-run on the Sunday morning to boost the competitive spirit of attendees.
Inclusivity was a strong focus of this year’s meeting. This was conveyed in practical terms with the inclusion of an onsite daycare for the entirety of the meeting. As a surgical trainee now juggling the new challenges of being a mum, this was very much appreciated. In keeping with the theme of excellence, ASOHNS have supported the GO Foundation this year, with educational scholarships awarded to indigenous students, Charlotte Ryan and Lachlan Grant.
In Australia, the Annual Scientific Meeting is always a highlight of the calendar. The organisers must be congratulated on such a successful, inclusive and stimulating meeting.
Excitement is already growing for the 76th Annual Scientific Meeting, which will be hosted in Hobart, Tasmania, from 20 - 22 March 2026 the Hotel Grand Chancellor. We hope you will join us.
