Dr Samuel Hofmann, ENT/Laryngologist, Lindenhofspital/Praxis Länggasse, Bern, Switzerland and Mr Philippe F de Z Bowles, Consultant ENT Surgeon/Laryngologist, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, Brighton, UK.
This successful meeting, hosted once again at L’Hôtel de L’Étrier in the Swiss Alps, provided a platform for open and friendly exchange with the goal of improving diagnosis and management of laryngeal disorders. The three-day conference brought together an expert international faculty, newcomers, repeat attenders (affectionately referred to as ‘frequent flyers’) and key representatives from industry; a mix of experience and skill sets that created a vibrant and stimulating environment.
Dr Lucian Sullica inaugurated the meeting by describing his experience medicalising care of the vocal performer. He also gave lectures on sulcus vocalis and vocal fold paresis. Mr Yakubu Karagama gave an overview of Isshiki thyroplasties, his approach to HPV treatment and reflections on his experience with the blue light laser. Dr Willem Lybaert guided us though the systemic treatment of head and neck cancer. Other highlights included management of the dysphonic and dysphagic child and a presentation of complex cases of Eagle’s syndrome.
The ever popular ‘Experts on the coach’ and ‘Bring your cases’ sessions produced lively discussion and open debate of complex and challenging clinical scenarios. The meeting’s final session on Saturday morning was a hands-on workshop offering practical experience of injection laryngoplasty, Montgomery thyroplasty and blue light laser.
Beyond the rich academic programme, meeting in a relaxed and comfortable setting facilitated professional collaboration and networking. The evening aperitif in front of the open fire in the hotel lobby provided an excellent environment for making new, and rekindling old, friendships. The raclette supper was a highlight of the evening programme, while the traditional Friday-night celebrations continued at the storied Monki bar.
Outside of the hotel, the first two days saw heavy snowfall before the clouds gave way to blue skies and sunshine, allowing delegates to enjoy the beautiful Alpine scenery and winter sports. The thoughtful provision of woolly hats in the welcome pack was warmly received by those of us who had forgotten to pack our own!
The Winter Days of Laryngology conference continues to be a dynamic and open forum for knowledge exchange, networking and professional development. With its carefully curated and innovative programme, and informal and welcoming tone, the meeting brings together passionate laryngologists from all levels and from across the world. We extend our gratitude to all co-participants, speakers, sponsors and of course the organising committee for their contributions to the success of this event.
