The exact prevalence of hearing loss is unknown in Saudi Arabia, however it is estimated that approximately eight to nine percent of the population (34,000,000) suffer from varying degrees of hearing loss. The national ‘Universal Neonatal Screening Program’ is implemented in all hospitals within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for early detection of hearing loss. If a patient is found to potentially benefit from cochlear implants, the patient is referred to one of several centres with cochlear implant programmes who cater to patients who may benefit from this procedure.
As an audiologist with a Bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation of Speech and Hearing and a Master’s of Science degree in Audiology from the University College London, I diagnose and manage hearing loss, assess and manage cochlear implants including other implantable devices and prescription and fitting of hearing aids.
